In what is a fitting piece of timing for us CD Projekt Red and Porsche announced this week that Cyberpunk 2077, the most highly anticipated game since…. ever, will feature the 1977 Porsche 911 Turbo.

We love PC gaming and we love cars so in the same week that we launched our PC business, crossover news is very welcome!

The game’s mysterious companion, Johnny Silverhand (played by Keanu Reeves) is a former rockstar and while his presence in 2077 is up for much discussion, he has been missing for the preceding 57 years, presumed dead, there is something that’s just oh so right about this choice. Wild rocker from the 2000s who went missing in 2020 drives classic Porsche? Yep – can envisage that in real life for sure.

And have a look at the 911. It stands out as ancient among all the super futuristic cyberpunk rides – yet it fits right in. You can see why classic 911 values are through the roof, they’re just so timeless. It has all the requisite upgrades for driving in the future of course. Lidar? Check. Cameras for mirrors? Check. Screens, electronics and markings so it’s identifiable from the air? Well you’ve got to have those in a dystopian future where the Police are all airborne…. Oh and it’s been converted to auto so it can self drive and it runs on biofuel.

Cue context enhancing quote from the press pack, “Johnny’s a legend of the Cyberpunk universe. When thinking about what kind of car he’d be driving through the streets of Night City, we knew it would have to be one just as legendary as he is. Having Johnny’s story in mind, and being huge fans of Porsche ourselves, the answer could only be the classic 911 Turbo,” said Paweł Mielniczuk, Art Director of Characters, Weapons and Vehicles, CD PROJEKT RED.

The really fun news, because I’m sure they’ve got plenty of spare late ’70s 911 Turbos lying around, is that Porsche have actually created the car in real life. Neat.

Cyberpunk 2077 will release November 19th, 2020, for PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Stadia. The game will also be playable on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 consoles when available.
